Please find below an overview of the most frequently asked questions to Nespresso's Customer Relationship Centers. We hope that we can assist you with an answer to your query directly.
Begin with your machine turned on, warmed up and without a capsule in the chamber. Place a cup under the spout, then press and hold the cup button you would like to program. Water will begin to flow. Release the cup button when the cup has been filled to your desired level. The machine will produce the same pour next time the button is pressed.
When brewing an espresso capsule it is not recommended to run more than 1.35 oz/40 ml through any one capsule as this will result in negative (bitter) aromas in the cup, known as "over extraction". If you are interested in a larger cup of coffee but not necessarily a stronger one, we encourage you to try an "americano", which is an espresso shot with hot water added (eject the capsule and brew a "blank" shot).
Furthermore, you may try our lungos range. Lungo, which translates to "long" in Italian, refers to a style of espresso which is larger than the traditional 1.35 oz/40 ml size. Our 4 lungo capsules contain 20-25% more ground coffee. You can thus brew a taller cup of espresso with a single capsule. A traditional lungo is poured to 3.75 oz/110 ml. Lungos are also recommended if you are looking for a more substantial amount of coffee.

The caffeine content per brewed espresso capsule will vary between approximately 55 and 65 mg. The lungo blends contain 20% more coffee per capsule; therefore, they have slightly higher caffeine content, about 77-89 mg.
This variation depends mainly on the green coffee (Arabica vs. Robusta), the degree of roasting and to a lesser extent, the coffee origin. Our decaffeinated blends contain roughly 0.005 mg of caffeine. There is no correlation between the assigned "intensity" and caffeine content.

Nespresso removes over 99.9% of the caffeine from green coffee by using water as solvent. This is known as the Swiss Water® Process of decaffeination. Green coffee grains are soaked in hot water in order to dissolve the caffeine. The decaffeinated beans are then dried while active carbon is used to absorb the caffeine from the water. The dried beans are soaked again in the water now free of caffeine. This process is repeated until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free. Finally, the green coffee beans are dried, roasted and then ground.
The residual caffeine content in Nespresso decaffeinated blends is below 0.1%, in accordance with all regulatory requirements. Nespresso currently offers three varieties of decaffeinated coffee (Vivalto Lungo Decaffeinato, Volluto Decaffeinato, Ristretto Decaffeinato and Arpeggio Decaffeinato). The water extraction process maintains the aromas and flavors of the bean. The decaffeinated Nespresso varieties undergo the same quality controls applied to all Nespresso Grands Crus blends.

It is normal for water to collect in a machine’s drip tray and capsule container during brewing.
Brewing a taller cup of coffee or multiple cups in a short period of time will fill the tray quicker. You will also find a higher quantity of water accumulate when the pump is activated without a capsule in the chamber.

Our coffee experts select only the highest quality beans from the finest coffee producing regions in the world.
Due to our strict coffee selection process and our sourcing based on selected terroirs, we estimate that only 1-2% of the coffee grown worldwide complies with our specific flavor and aroma profiles, and with the quality requirements .
Throughout the year, Nespresso coffee experts and their coffee supplier partners ensure these high quality standards by actively seeking those coffees grown in farming communities in the main coffee producing areas of the world. These are often remote regions, where the combination of altitude, climate and rich soil produces the distinctive flavors, aromas and complex character that make up Nespresso coffees.

Nespresso capsules are made with aluminum -the best material to protect the freshness and flavor of our coffees- which has the added benefit of being infinitely recyclable. Nespresso has been investing in recycling programs for 25 years. We are committed to making them simple and convenient for our Customers to recycle their Nespresso coffee capsules.

Through the program dedicated to recycling, the capsules are sent to recycling plants. Once there, the aluminum is separated from the coffee. The coffee obtained is used to generate compost. The capsules are heated to high temperatures to melt the internal materials they contain. Once only the aluminum remains, it is melted and recycled.
