The Nespresso capsules contain only fresh roasted and ground coffee with the exception of the flavoured coffees (Vanilla Éclair, Caramel Créme Brulee, Cocoa Truffle) which also contain natural flavours added to fresh roasted and ground coffee. It is the combination of the Nespresso system - machines and hermetically sealed capsules-, which creates the consistently dense crema and perfect in-cup results.

The Vertuo capsules feature new technology: each capsule has a barcode that helps the machine recognise the ground coffee, so that the intelligent system can prepare the coffee in just the right way. In order to be able to make this wide range of cup sizes with the same coffee machine, the Vertuo system works with three different capsule sizes: a small capsule for Espressos, a medium capsule for Double Espressos and Gran Lungos, and a large capsule for Mugs. The different capsule sizes contain different amounts of coffee grounds, the larger the cup size, the more. This explains the difference in the price of the coffee capsules.

If no water comes out of the spout of the machine when you press one of the coffee maker buttons, the system has most likely become airless. This can happen if you do not use the machine for a long period of time and if the water in the coffee tank has run out while brewing.
In the case of Essenza Mini, Inissia, Essenza Plus, CitiZ, Pixie, Lattissima, Creatista, lift the lever so that the capsule inside falls into the container and close it. Press the button of one of the coffee cups and the built-in air venting unit will extract the remaining air from the system.
In the case of an Atelier, lift the capsule holder and insert the milk frother. Press any button to start brewing and the built-in venting unit will expel the remaining air from the system.
For Vertuo machines, please start the cleaning programme according to the instructions for use.

The orange double flash can mean several things, please check the following:
Have you inserted a capsule? If not, put one in the device, as it will not start without a capsule. If you have, check that the black capsule cage has not previously collected any water. This should be kept dry. It is also advisable to clean the transparent optical ring around the capsule for trouble-free barcode reading.
Make sure that the lever that closes the head is turned all the way to the stop (may vary depending on the model: up to or beyond the padlock symbol).
Gently turn the centrifugal head on the top of the head 2-3 times in each direction. Effective extraction may cause the spinning head to jam/stick due to the coffee oils being released. Then start a cleaning programme.

It is totally normal that some of the water or coffee flows/drops into the capsule container. Mostly it happens when you do not insert a capsule into the machine, and the rewing unit is not sealed with the capsule.
The capsule container can hold 5 or 6 used capsule. Coffee/water is also collected in the drip tray in the same time (about half in this time). It is advisable to empty it regularly because the collected liquid flows easily.
If the capsule is deformed or improperly inserted, the brewing unit will not close tightly and water will flow straight through to the coffee outlet or to the drip tray.
If the problem persists and there is a huge amount of water in the drip tray, please contact Nespresso

The milk frother or the steam system of the appliance is probably clogged.
-Disassemble the milk frother unit according to the instructions and wash it thoroughly - it can be cleaned in a household dishwasher (max 60 °C) - and reassemble it.
-Switch on the appliance, fill the water tank with drinking water and put the milk frother unit on. Place a large cup/glass under the spout of the milk frother.
-Press and hold the button marked 'clean' on the milk frother unit for 10-15 seconds. The unit will steam through the system. If necessary, repeat the steaming process several times.
- If the above does not solve the problem, descale the appliance as described in the instructions for use.
We can also help you with milk frother cleaning via video. To access the videos, please click on Machine Assistance and then select the type of machine you have and the topic you would like help with.
Important: For good quality milk foam, you need milk that is chilled, preferably with a higher protein content. Some types of milk (e.g. organic, lactose-free, soy, seed and other alternative milks) do not foam well. Try to use cold, preferably long-life milk with a fat content of between 1.5 and 3.5%.

The optimum temperature of the coffee at the coffee outlet is between 83-89 °C. It might be much colder in the cup, especially if the cup itself is cold, or if a short coffee is prepaper into a big cup. We advise to preheat the cup with hot water. The other possible reason is that the machine needs to be descaled.
Click Yes to return to the FAQ, click No to ask your question.
It is always a good idea to check that the used capsule holder is not full, which can prevent the new capsule from being inserted properly.
It is important that, with the capsule holder fully open (with the sliding switch open in the case of U, Prodigio, Expert), the capsule is inserted into the device without any adjustment and then closed until it is completely horizontal.
The coffee flow may be partially or completely blocked. In such a case, it is necessary to clean the pyramid plate (the part that pierces the capsule from the front) with a sponge or a softer brush. Then turn the machine on, fill the water tank with drinking water. Place a large cup under the spout. Brew a portion of water through the machine, without the capsule. Repeat this 3-4 times until you have clean water flowing from the machine.
Suggestion: It's a good idea to do a clean water cleansing once every 1-2 days with 1 cup of water.
Another possible reason is the need to descale the appliance.

The amount of caffeine is different for each coffee and depends on three factors: the proportion of Robusta in the blend (Robusta contains twice as much caffeine as Arabica), and the quantity of ground coffee and water used to prepare the cup.
For Vertuo, the caffeine content varies depending on the cup size and coffee blend:

Crema is a naturally formed foam of coffee and air. It is produced during the extraction process and is a sign of ultimate coffee quality, enhancing the tasting pleasure. The crema protects coffee aromas, sealing them in the cup until they are released as the coffee drinker enjoys his/her coffee. The crema allows consumers to benefit from the full aromatic profile. This is the first single-serve system to brew large-cup coffee with crema, as crema has traditionally been a feature of espresso.
The crema of Original Espressos and Lungos is dense and creamy while the crema from the Vertuo is more generous.

There are 60 species of coffee tree in the world, and only 2 are cultivated for consumption: Coffea Arabica (Arabica) and Coffea Canephora (Robusta). Arabica shrubs are delicate and demanding plants, cultivated in plantations situated on the slopes of mountains, mainly in Central and South America, and in Eastern Africa. The delicacy of its aroma generally increases as the altitude at which it is grown rises. Robusta is more resistant to the conditions of tropical climates and grows in areas disliked by the Arabica plant, in low-lying country where it is hot and humid, mainly in West Africa and in South-East Asia.

The Nespresso concept has redefined and revolutionised the way millions of people enjoy their espresso coffee today. It has shaped the global coffee culture. Thanks to continuous innovations and highest quality, Nespresso has evolved from being the pioneer and trendsetter for portioned coffee into a worldwide reference.
Each Nespresso blend has unique aromatic notes. Our standard selection of 30 various blends can be subdivided into six coffee families, based on their similar characteristics. These families are Ispirazione Italiana, Barista Creations, Master Origin, Espresso and Lungo.
Perfect coffee is no coincidence, it all starts at the growing land. It must be deliberately created, consistently and without compromise, cup after cup, which means we push the boundaries uncompromisingly at every step of the long value chain from tree to cup.
Nespresso capsules are designed to work perfectly with Nespresso machines. Capsule technology is not only infinitely recyclable; it also retains the freshness and quality of ground coffee. It is completely sealed from air, light and humidity, guarding the aroma, freshness and flavour of perfectly ground coffee until the moment of brewing.

All Nespresso coffees contain between 40 and 130 mg of caffeine. The amount of caffeine in a capsule depends on the varieties of coffee used in the recipe. The Robusta contains an average of 2.4% whereas the Arabica contain approximately 1.3% of caffeine. Decaffeinated capsules contain less than 0.1% of caffeine.
Kazaar, Master Origin India, World Explorations Cape Town Envivo Lungo and Barista Creations Corto have more than 100 mg caffeine per cup due to their high Robusta content.
Below are examples or average caffeine contents according to the type of coffee preparation (values are based on UK Food Standards Agency):
Cup of filter coffee: 80–200 mg
Mug of instant coffee: 40–100 mg
Tea cup: 25–110 mg
Standard cola drink: up to 50mg
Standard energy drink: 80 mg

All decaffeinated product is tested and must legally contain less than 0.1% residual caffeine. Caffein content is checked in green coffee, in roasted coffee and in the finished product. Decaffeinated coffee contains max 3 mg of caffine per cup.
Click Yes to return to the FAQ, click No to ask your question.
Nespresso uses coffee decaffeinated with water and carbon dioxide from natural sources. For the Nestlé -owned water decaffeination process, green coffee grains are soaked in hot water in order to dissolve caffeine. The green coffee beans free of caffeine are dried while the water extract goes through active carbon where caffeine is absorbed. Dried green coffee beans are re-soaked in the water extract now free of caffeine. Subsequently, green coffee beans are dried and roasted. Decaffeination with carbon dioxide is a very gentle process occuring under pressure at almost room temperature. Caffeine is extracted very selectively, reducing any unwanted changes to the coffee bean composition to a very minimum. The residual caffeine content in decaffeinated coffee at Nespresso is below 0.1% w/w, in order to comply with the most stringent regulatory requirements in this field. Nespresso has several varieties of decaffeinated coffee. Both extraction processes allow to extract caffeine while keeping intact the aromas and flavours of coffee.

All coffees contain aluminium which is naturally present in green coffees, as in many other raw materials of agricultural origin. Nespresso coffee does NOT contain aluminium coming from the capsules nor the pods, as coffee is not in direct contact with the aluminium sheet. There is a food grade film (invisible) which separates the aluminium from the coffee. The analyses Nespresso performs show that there is NO contribution from the Aluminium coming from the capsule to the cup.

Flavours come in the form of a very fine powder. They are added to the coffee after grinding. As they are specially designed for Nespresso to make a perfect and original harmony, the flavours have been recreated using a blend containing natural substances. These natural substances have a natural origins like plants or flowers, with at least part of the natural substance originating from a base component of the characterized flavour. The flavours do not contain any food allergens.

Nowadays, we can find many alternative milks on store shelves. These plant-based milks can also be a great complement to coffee: they can be made from cereals (rice, oats, barley), legumes (soya, chickpeas) or nuts (almonds, walnuts, chestnuts, coconut). Unfortunately, most of them are not suitable for making milk foam.
This is because most plant-based milks have little or no protein content. The foaming properties / frothability of milk doesn’t depend on the fat content of the milk, but are determined solely by the protein content.
There is a choice of different brands and different products, which may have different protein contents. For better results, it is therefore advisable to choose the product with the highest protein content.
It is also important to point out that plant milks (and animal-derived milks) do not remain completely homogeneous after opening. It is therefore advisable to consume the opened carton as soon as possible and to shake it thoroughly before use.
Please also make sure that the milk temperature is between 4°C and 6°C and pour it into a completely cleaned, dry milk Aeroccino. To avoid deposits and consequent breakdowns, always clean the whisk thoroughly, soaking it in warm water with detergent if necessary.
Tip1: some brands have a range of Barista products specifically designed for milk whipping
Tip 2: Add 10-20% soya milk to the milk you want to froth (soya milk has a higher protein content than other plant milks)

A Nespresso considers the reduction of its carbon footprint particularly important, therefore like in other Western European countries has launched its capsule recycling program in Hungary too.
All Nespresso Grand Cru capsules are made of aluminium, as this is the most appropriate material to preserve the perfect quality and freshness of our coffee.
After the separation of components, coffee grounds can be upgraded in a number of ways. They can be used for example as a natural fertiliser for agriculture or as an energy source for domestic heating.
The recycling of used coffee capsules in Hungary has been fully elaborated by Nespresso and these are carried out within the territory of Hungary. Recycling of both aluminium and coffee grounds are held by our professional partners, aluminium continues its was in aluminium production and coffee grounds is reused as energy resource.
Currently you are able to bring your used coffee capsules to our used coffee capsule container in the Nespresso Boutiques, however Nespresso elaborates new collecting system to triplicate its capacity in order to increase the number of recycled capsules to 75 %.
The Nespresso Boutiques can be found on the following address:
Nespresso Boutique:
Nespresso mini Boutique:

Nespresso's aluminum capsules perfectly ensure the freshness and aroma of our coffees. Aluminum is also a material that can be recycled an unlimited number of times without losing its properties. Approximately one-third of the world's aluminum needs come from recycled sources, and 75% of the aluminum ever produced is still in use. Thanks to recycling, we can give capsules a new life.
